Strengthening Families Program

The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is an evidence-based family skills training program designed to help families remain safely together, divert children and youth from entering out-of-home care, improve relationships, and provide support for reunification.

How are youth eligible?

The SFP involves the whole family. The program was developed specifically as a selective prevention strategy for 7- to 17-year-old children, youth, and their families who may be involved with substance abuse, criminal justice, or child welfare systems. By inviting all family members, the SFP attracts families at high-risk without making them feel stigmatized or judged.

What are the goals?

The SFP teaches parents and youth skills involved in bonding and establishing appropriate, consistent boundaries. It also educates parents on how to monitor their children’s emotional well-being and guide their activities to ensure they always maintain an alcohol and drug-free social environment. SFP outcomes include, but are not limited to:

  • Decreased use and desire for alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs

  • Enhanced protection and development of resiliency in children and youth by improving their social and life skills, peer resistance, and communication skills

  • Improved parent and child attachment and family relationships, communication, and organization

  • Improved parenting skills, reductions in inappropriate or lax discipline, and progress in parenting efficacy

  • Reduced youth behavior problems and emotional challenges, such as depression and psychosomatic conditions
